Cyclists across Cambridgeshire are training up for the two big charity events of the Summer – The Big Bike Ride on the 8th July and the London to Cambridge Bike Ride on 22nd July. To help them give supporters a bit more fun, ViewRanger is suggesting that cyclists use the ‘buddy beacon’ feature of its free app to add excitement to a sweepstake.
Daniel Stewardson, Digital Marketing Executive for ViewRanger, will be doing the Big Bike Ride as part of a company team, and he explains that with Buddy Beacon, activated supporters at home – or in the pub – can follow progress of their team.
“You can download the ViewRanger app for free and it comes with a sports computer, which is great when you are training, and also a ‘Buddy Beacon’ feature. Buddy Beacon shows your position on a map and you can choose to allow as few or as many people as you like to see your progress.
“Team ViewRanger will all be using Buddy Beacon, which will help family and friends to locate us at lunchtime and if we get split up to see where everyone is.”
He suggests that the Buddy Beacon feature can also be used to support fundraising.
“For many people the silver route of the Big Bike Ride is an opportunity to get out and enjoy the sites of Cambridge all for a good cause.
“The Gold bike ride is more gruelling and offers the opportunity for some serious cycling and a bit of competition. People will want to know the fastest time, first home, fastest leg of the journey and they can get this from the Buddy Beacon.”
ViewRanger offers a map on a phone with a sophisticated navigation system, this is ideal for cyclists as they can mount their phone on the handle-bars and see their route without the need to stop to look at a map.
To encourage people to explore more of the countryside while they train for the Big Bike Ride, ViewRanger will donate 50p to Cambridge News Press Relief for every £7.50 purchase of the East of England Ordnance Survey map 1:50,000 scale from the in-app store from now until 8th July.
The Cambridge Big Bike Ride route can be downloaded here.
Tips for accessing maps
The ViewRanger app is free-to-download for users of Apple, Android or Symbian smart phones, who will be able to see the route overlaid on OpenStreetMaps and OpenCycleMaps.
Once you have installed the App, either use your phone to request the Big Bike Ride via ‘routes’ or register on the computer at myviewranger.com, search for the Cambridge Big Bike Ride and click ‘buy now’ (this won’t cost anything).
There are good cycling routes all over Cambridgeshire, so dedicated cyclists may want to download the more detailed East of England Ordinance Survey mapping to plan and record their training.
Owners of Apple iPhone/iPad, Android or Symbian devices can download the app for free. Alternatively, from the Apple app store there is a £9.99 “Premium” version of the app available, which includes £15 credit for purchasing Ordnance Survey maps at 1:50,000 or 1:25,000 scale.
